During this session, Maarit Ströbele presented three texts on the topic of "The Suburban". Departing from the Suburban as an important type of daily living environment, the three chosen texts introduced ways of thinking about space and society.

The Robert Fishman text analyzed suburbia in it's historical context. The Thomas Sieverts text examined the contemporary (1991) European cityscape and the Walter Prigge text presented aspects of Lefebvre's conceptualization of space.

During this session, Daniel Morgenthaler presented excerpts from the book “See it Again, Say it Again: The Artist as Researcher”, edited by Janneke Wesseling and published by Valiz.

“See it Again, Say it Again” sheds light on the phenomenon of research in the visual arts. In ‘artistic research’, practical acts (the making) and theoretical reflection (the thinking) go hand in hand, in a manner similar to creating and thinking being inextricably linked with artistic practice. This volume has been written from the perspective of art as practice.

Visiting Artist Talk: Róza El Hassan

This session kicked off the 2012 Theory Tuesdays season. Visiting Hungarian artist, Róza El Hassan, presented her "No Corruption, Social Brand Wicker Art" project.

“No Corruption” was conceived as an international brand to produce functional objects based on wicker techniques. The products of the "No Corruption" brand demonstrate the high level and elegance of objects produced by the most discriminated people, if given temporarily, the same opportunities as the middle class.

In Hungary, about 600,000 people belong to the Roma minority. Most of them live in extreme poverty in small villages in eastern and southern Hungary. One of the traditional crafts of the region is a special wicker technique. When El Hassan arrived in the village of Szendrőlád, the elder masters still knew the ancient and unique techniques of wicker and special wood chip braiding, called szilács.

The starting point for El Hassan was in functional design: laptop-bags and camera-bags made of wicker. "No Corruption, Social Brand Wicker Art" brought together freelance artists and designers, scholars and Roma basket weavers to work alongside one another and develop products.

The Cafè Society (Part II)

For their second session, The Café Society opened up a discussion about the reader and experience of using "Lines" to respond to the texts. This session added a new level of engagement to Theory Tuesdays in that there was a discussion around the actual use of the "Lines" application, alongside a more traditional discussion in response to the texts.

The Café Society (Lukas Zimmer & Anthon Astrom) work on the topic of on-screen reading/writing. They create frameworks – rule sets – based on how reading, writing and organization of textual information could work differently. As our daily reading habits change, so must our writing habits and the way we communicate, and ultimately the way we think.

The Cafè Society (Part I)

During this first of two, back-to-back, Theory Tuesdays sessions, The Café Society presented their four most recent projects: "trails", "collecthing", "SchplitZing" and "Lines". At the end of the session a reader was handed out. The reader included text excerpts from writings that inspired the four projects. It was possible to respond to the reader in "Lines" before the second session on November 29th.

Excerpt from the book "The Sovereignty of Art: Aesthetic Negativity in Adorno and Derrida“ by Christoph Menke.

From the rear jacket cover of the book: “In this book Christoph Menke attempts to explain art´s sovereign power over reason without falling into an error common to Adorno´s negative dialectics and Derrida´s deconstruction. The error, which appeared earlier in romanticism, is to conceive of the sovereignty of art as a reflection of the superiority of its knowledge. For art entails no knowledge, and its negativity toward reason cannot be articulated as an insight into the nature of reason: Art is sovereign not despite, but because of, its autonomy.”

During this Theory Tuesdays session we plunged directly into the 5th chapter of Menke´s book – the chapter titled: “Aesthetic Sovereignty”. The discussion outlined core elements of Menke´s argument in relation to aesthetic sovereignty, Adorno, and Derrida. We also “wrestled-out” the possible implications of these ideas with regards to both producing and viewing visual art today.

The objective of the magazine is to create a platform where curatorial concerns, diverse curatorial models and the formation of a theory of curating are addressed.

“What Does Public Mean? Art as a Participant in the Public Arena” edited by Tone Hansen

The book focuses on art projects that take place outside of established art institutions in Oslo, Hamburg and San Sebastian. It takes into consideration art and the artist’s function in the public sphere, while also looking at the art world’s role in dealing politically with issues of conflict. “What Does Public Mean? Art as a Participant in the Public Arena” was published by Torpedo press, an Oslo-based publisher, in 2006.

The three essays discussed during this session included an introduction by Tone Hansen, “A Frame Around Reality” by Marianne Heier, an Oslo-based artist and “Publicness: The Site-Specificity of a Concept” by Stian Grøgaard, Professor in the department of Fine Art at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts.

Jana is a Prague-based visual artist and designer who participated in a three-month residency in Zurich by a Swiss foundation ProHelvetia (June–August 2010). In her work, Jana often subverts social reality, control and system as well as commonly accepted values by releasing fake websites, magazines or creating fake identities. Recently, the Czech ministry of Labour and Social Affairs had filed criminal charges against her for Internet project “rent-a-baby”.

Visiting Artist Talk: Chris Tourre (Chicago, USA)

Christopher Tourre is a Chicago-based artist and part of Unit 2 Art and Design Collective. Tourre's work explores community, spirituality, and the folkier aspects of culture while highlighting participation and DIY culture as critical components to his art-making. Tourre obtained a BFA in Sculpture from The Pennsylvania State University and an MFA in Studio Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His work has been shown at various venues including most recently the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Co-Prosperity Sphere, Gallery 400, Eel Space and The South Side Community Arts Center.

Lada Nakonechna versteht Kunst als Form des öffentlichen Dialogs und als Möglichkeit der Wissensbildung. Die 1981 in der Ukraine geborene Künstlerin richtet in ihren Installationen, Video-, Foto- und Grafikarbeiten den Blick auf das öffentliche Zeitgeschehen und scheut in keiner Weise vor Gesellschaftskritik zurück. Neben Themen wie menschliches Konsumverhalten, Überlegenheitsansprüche sowie Rolle und Funktion von Massenmedien, setzt sie sich auch mit dem Einfluss der neoliberalen Strömungen in ihrem Land auseinander. Dabei unternimmt sie den Versuch aufzuzeigen, inwieweit sich diese auf zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen auswirken und gegebenenfalls verändern. In den Arbeiten Lada Nakonechnas geht es übergeordnet immer auch um die Verantwortung des Menschen zu sich selbst, seinen Mitmenschen und seiner Umwelt sowie sein Umgang mit Geschichte und Erinnerung.

Visiting Artist Talk: Nic Hess (Switzerland)

Auf Nic Hess’ Wegen bleiben die Insignien der globalisierten Welt an den Bändern und Folien kleben. Insbesondere Logos und Markenzeichen, Signets und Embleme gehen ihm auf den Leim, von Finanzinstituten und Hilfswerken, von Sportartikelherstellern und Lebensmittelketten. Mit dieser Entourage in den Museen, Galerien, Kulturinstituten, aber auch Privathäusern und Industriekomplexen angekommen, verklebt Nic Hess seine Bänder und Folien zu grossen Erzählungen, wie andere Künstler Linien zeichnen und Flächen malen. Wand- und deckenfüllend, treppenhausdurchwandernd, die Fenster kreuzend, bis in die Schornsteine kriechend. Die unterwegs eingefangenen Logos und anderen Zeichen finden sich, miteinander versöhnt und verbrüdert, an allen Ecken und Enden. Daher hat Nic Hess weltweit nicht nur den Ruf, Meister der Klebebänder zu sein, sondern auch Meister der Logos.
